O'Connor not for sale - August 4, 2000

Stoke City's Supporters Player of the Year James O'Connor has been the subject of numerous transfer rumours of the summer but Stoke boss Gudjon Thordarson is adamant that the midfielder is going nowhere.

Irish u21 international O'Connor was linked with a move to West Brom a month ago but nothing materialised but the club have confirmed that they did get a firm offer for the player.

The Stoke boss said: "There were some inquiries and one offer and we turned that down. He's not for sale - we want to keep everybody that we don't want to sell.

"We are strengthening the squad to be a better team and to do that you've got to be able to protect your better players."

O'Connor said of the speculation: "I signed a contract at the end of the season and I'm more than happy here. My aim is getting Stoke into the First Division."
