Kinnear confirmed in Luton job - February 7, 2001

Former Republic of Ireland international Joe Kinnear has been confirmed today as Luton Town's new Director of Football - less than a week after quitting a similar job at Oxford United.

Kinnear, who won his managerial stripes at Wimbledon after a distinguished playing career with Tottenham, left Oxford citing health reasons. In fact his decision was believed to be connected with Oxford's failure to fulfil promises regarding finance for new players.

The Irishman, who spent nine years at the helm of the Dons before a heart attack terminated his involvement, has gone from the Manor Ground frying pan into the Kenilworth Road fire - Luton lie 23rd in division two - but says he is looking forward to the challenge.

"I am delighted to be involved with Luton and believe the club has huge potential," he said.
