Kinnear quits Oxford - February 1, 2001

Former Republic of Ireland international Joe Kinnear has quit as director of football at Oxford United after just four months in the job. Ex-Wimbledon boss Kinnear cited health reasons for his departure.

Kinnear took on the job - his first since suffering a heart attack in 1999 - last October.

"I have decided to take time out to look after my health and spend more time with my family," he said.

"Oxford United is geared to the future with the new stadium on the horizon and things about to happen. It is a super little club and I wish manager David Kemp, his assistant Alan McLeary and all associated with it the best of luck. I have enjoyed the short time I have spent at the Manor Ground."

But the former Tottenham full back was also believed to be unhappy that cash-for-players promises had not been kept by the club's directors - and he refused to rule out taking another job in football.

"I have got nothing planned for the immediate future but I will keep my options open," he said.
