Melligan catches the eye at Wolves - January 16, 2001

Ireland underage international JJ Melligan could be on the verge of a first-team place at Wolves after two impressive performances for their reserve team since new manager David Jones took charge at Molineux.

Melligan scored last week as the reserves thrashed Oldham 4-0 in the Avon Insurance League Premier Division and he repeated the dose this week with the opening goal against Doc Martens League side Rugby United in the Birmingham Senior Cup.

JJ hit a first-time shot into the back of the net in the 53rd minute to set Wolves on their way to a second consecutive 4-0 win. He could have scored again a while later but his shot cannoned off the opposing goalkeepers legs and away to safety.

Melligan is not only scoring he is also setting up goals as he proved with Wolves' fourth goal, when he picked out Shane Barratt with a pinpoint pass which left the striker with all the time in the world to pick his spot.

Nor was Melligan the only Irishman to make headlines in the game. Seamus Crowe had a very competitive game which saw him being booked and striker Colin Larkin replaced Temuri Ketsbaia for the second time in a week and got in on the scoring act too.

Larkin reacted quickest to the loose ball when the Rugby goalkeeper palmed away a shot and calmly slotted home. He then set up Barratt minutes later for Wolves third goal.
