Weah graces Gannon's day - August 6, 2000

Jim Gannon's testimonial game against Manchester City at Edgeley Park on Saturday was a massive success. A crowd of 8,459 turned up to see Stockport County take on newly promoted City and one of the main factors for the huge crowd was the debut of George Weah for the visitors.

To put the crowd in perspective, it was the biggest crowd at the ground since March of this year. Coincidentally, that game was also against Manchester City.

To make the game even better for Jim, against the odds, Stockport beat City 4-1 despite Weah getting on the scoresheet.

The 31-year-old Irishman will earn a tidy sum from the day's proceeding and he was quick to thank everybody who turned up. He said: "I thanked George Weah as I thanked every player. He must have put 2,000 on the attendance, the sun seemed to shine on me. I think everyone had a brilliant time, one which I find difficult to put into words."

The day has only made Gannon more determined than ever to revive his career after a knee-ligament injury last March threatened to keep him out of the game for good. However, he isn't likely to resume playing until at least November.
