Hoops want GAA compo- October 26, 2000

Shamrock Rovers are to seek compensation from the GAA for 'poaching' one of their players!

The Hoops want Croke Park to cough up after yesterday's revelation that Jason Sherlock is to quit soccer in favour of Gaelic football.

Rovers reluctantly agreed last year when Sherlock asked for a 'career-break' from soccer so that he could concentrate on playing football for Na Fianna and Dublin.

Sherlock costs the Hoops 25,000 pounds when they signed him from UCD and still has a year of his contract left to run.

But during the summer, Sherlock established himself in the Dublin team which reached the Leinster final - and Na Fianna have just won their second successive senior county title.

Now Rovers chairman Joe Colwell has called on the GAA to compensate the club for the remainder of Sherlock's contract.

"As far as we are concerned, we are losing a player with a year to run on his contract," Colwell said.
