Jason Byrne linked with Tranmere - August 11, 2000 Bray Wanderers striker Jason Byrne is being lined up as a target for John Aldridge's Tranmere Rovers in a deal which would smash the Irish transfer record. A proven goalscorer, Byrne has been watched by Rovers scouts during pre-season and it is believed that the Prenton Park club are ready to offer him a contract - but they could have to battle with a number of clubs for his signature. The 22-year-old striker, who scored two goals for Bray in the 1999 FAI Cup final, has been dogged by injury and controversy since. Byrne's suspension during last year's Cup semi-final led to a court case between Bray and the FAI. A cousin of Robbie Keane, Jason plays his football very much like the Inter Milan striker. His distribution is excellent and he always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Tranmere have lost two Irish players during the close season including striker David Kelly. A club spokesman said: "We are interested in the player but cannot comment much further". «back to eircom league stories |
