Irwin to create another piece of United history - June 26, 2000

Denis Irwin's testimonial year looks set to earn the former Republic of Ireland full-back a huge windfall. It looks as if his testimonial game at Old Trafford on August 16, against Manchester City will be played in front of a sell-out 64,000 spectators - beating the previous record 60,000 attendance which witnessed Bobby Charlton's testimonial.

In Denis' ten-year spell at Old Trafford he has been practically an ever-present in the first team. His haul of medals is staggering. His collection includes awards for six Premiership titles and two runner-up slots; a Champions' League medal; European Super-Cup and Intercontinental Cup medals; two FA Cup winners' medals and one runners-up: one League Cup winners' and two runners up; and five Charity Shield winners and two runners up.

To mark his testimonial year his medal haul will be on display in the club museum from next month.

United are hoping to have the new West Stand second-tier extension opened for Irwin's testimonial. Manchester City have been allocated an initial 5,000 tickets for the game and that number could double eventually.
