Harte clinches place in last eight - February 22, 2001

Republic of Ireland full back and dead-ball specialist Ian Harte clinched Leeds United's place in the last eight of the Champions League, as the English club hammered Anderlecht last night.

Harte, who scored a magnificent free-kick to give Leeds victory over the Belgians in last week's home fixture, last night sealed the club's place in history by firing home the winner from the penalty spot.

Leeds had raced into a 3-0 lead with two goals from Alan Smith - in instead of the cup-tied Robbie Keane - and one from Mark Viduka.

But Anderlecht came back strongly and, when giant Czech striker Jan Koller pulled one back, they threatened to poop the party.

Enter Harte. His emphatic penalty aborted the Belgians' comeback and allowed Leeds to finish in celebratory style.

David O'Leary's club, who have struggled in the Premiership this season, became the first English club to claim their place in the knockout stages of the competition - and, though Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Lyon last night and Manchester United were held at home by Valencia on Tuesday, there is still a live possibility that three Premiership teams will compete in the last eight this season.
