Harte attack does it for Leeds - February 14, 2001

Republic of Ireland full back Ian Harte saved Leeds United's bacon last night as the English club came from behind to beat Anderlecht and go second in their Champions League group.

Leeds were rocked when Alin Stoica fired the Belgians into a 65th-minute lead at Elland Road, after the home side had dominated most of the proceedings.

But Harte - dropped by manager Dave O'Leary recently - got Leeds back in the game with a stunning 30-yard free kick nine minutes later. And Lee Bowyer made it 2-1 with just four minutes left.

Drogheda-born Harte has now scored three goals since being restored to the team by O'Leary at the end of January.

He said: "It was nice to see it go in. I was scoring a lot of free kicks in pre-season but I haven't got too many during the regular season this term."

O'Leary praised the young Irishman, who should today be named in Mick McCarthy's squad for the upcoming friendly against Denmark.

"We were mugged," O'Leary said. "We gave away a silly one and then wen a bit flat after the shock. But then you had Ian Harte scoring a great free-kick goal and it was suddenly a case of 'game-on' again."
