Cork City want Houghton - July 6, 2000 Cork City have identified Ray Houghton as the man they want to succeed Colin Murphy as manager, following the latter's shock resignation. Houghton applied for the job after Dave Barry stepped down and was a serious contender. Last night the club's directors agreed to sound out the former Republic of Ireland international to see whether he still wants the job. The board also decided to check on the availability of former Sheffield United manager Steve Thompson, who also applied for the job last time round. In the meantime, with City due to go into UEFA Cup action on August 10 and Eircom League action just three days later, assistant manager Liam Murphy has been appointed caretaker manager. «back to eircom league stories |
