McGee wants Harps job - January 9, 2001

Former Finn Harps player Paul McGee wants to return to the Ballybofey club - as manager.

The former Irish international and QPR star had two spells with Harps as a player - in 1974, when he won an FAI Cup medal with the team, and in 1993, at the tail-end of his long career.

Now he wants to take over as manager - and he believes he can save the club from taking the drop to division one!

The financially-troubled club appointed Jonathan Speake as caretaker player-manager after Gavin Dykes resigned in protest at being asked to trim his squad to ease money worries.

"I completed my UEFA coaching badges last summer while working at the QPR academy," said McGee, currently head of coaching with Connacht Senior League club Salthill Devons.

"Harps may have problems but I feel they can still avoid the drop. They showed great spirit to bounce back from their troubles and beat Home Farm 3-0 in the Cup at the weekend."
