Whalley ice-cold on Alex - February 22, 2001

Crewe Alexander manager Dario Gradi claims he will unveil a mystery midfield signing this weekend - but Republic of Ireland B international Gareth Whalley denies that he is the player in question.

Gradi says he hopes to add a midfielder to his squad before Saturday's clash with Barnsley at Oakwell. The Alex manager says he has agreed terms with the player's club.

But despite constant rumours, Bradford City's out-of-favour Irishman Whalley says it's not him.

Whalley was a £500,000 signing from Crewe in 1998 but new Bradford boss Jim Jefferies has told the player he can move elsehwere.

But Whalley said: "I have a number of options and at the moment I don't think going back to Crewe is the best one."
