Whalley set for Alex return - February 20, 2001

Republic of Ireland midfielder Gareth Whalley could be set for a return to Crewe Alexander because he has been told by Bradford boss Jim Jeffries that he has no future at the Premiership club.

Crewe manager Dario Gradi is looking for a midfielder to strengthen the club's push away from the relegation zone in Division One and Whalley has been mentioned as a possibility for at least a loan deal.

Whalley made his name with Crewe before signing for Bradford in 1998 for £500,000. He was an integral part of the club's promotion from Division One and again played a major part in their survival in the Premiership last season.

He started this season well but an injury curtailed his first-team chances and since Jim Jeffries took over at the club he has fallen out of favour.
