O'Connor signs for Bournemouth - June 6, 2000

Bohemians have lost the fight to keep their talented forward Gareth O'Connor. The 21-year-old has signed a two-year deal with English Second Division club Bournemouth which ends months of speculation over his future.

O'Connor came of age in the Bohemians team last season, helping them to the FAI Cup final and a high placing in the Premier League. Bournemouth manager Mel Machin is delighted with the signing of the out-of-contract player.

Machin has proved himself time and again as a good judge of young players. Ireland and Manchester United centre-back John O'Shea was on loan at the club earlier in the season and he made a big impression.

Machin has brought O'Connor to Dean Court from Bohemians on a two-year deal, with an option for a further two years. He said: "After having a look at Gareth here earlier in the season we were happy with what we saw and, as with other signings, it was a case of moving for him as soon as he was out of contract and became available.

"Gareth is full of running and he likes to attack players. He can give defences problems and we're confident he'll adapt well to the Second Division."

Gareth is relishing the chance to prove himself in England. He said: "It's fantastic to be here. As soon as I knew the manager was interested in me my mind was made up. I want the opportunity to prove myself over here and Bournemouth have given me the chance to prove that."

Bournemouth are also nearing completion of the signing of Shaun Maher. The Bohemians centre-back who returned from England after failing to find a place in the Fulham team will cost the Second Division club £100,000.
