Goals flow for the Irish - December 27, 2000

The goals flowed for the Irish across the water yesterday, with strikes in every division from Premiership to Nationwide Three.

Big Niall Quinn led the way, his 45th-minute opener inspiring Sunderland to a 4-1 win over Bradford in the Premiership. And his international teammate Gary Breen headed a crucial 87th-minute winner for Coventry City away to Everton.

In Division 1, veteran Dave Kelly scored the winner in Sheffield United's important 2-0 win over promotion rivals West Brom, while in Division 2 senior international Dave Savage opened the scoring in Northampton's 2-0 home win over Bristol City.

Robbie Ryan got on the scoresheet too, but at the wrong end - his 87th-minute own goal representing the only blot on Millwall's 6-1 trouncing of Colchester.

In Division 3, Martin Devaney thought he had earned a win for Cheltenham with his 84th-minute strike, but Tolley equalised for Shrewsbury four minutes later. But two late Sean McCarthy goals were enough to earn Plymouth a 2-1win at home to Cardiff.
