Kelly will miss Denmark match - January 30, 2001
Republic of Ireland defender Gary Kelly will miss up to six weeks, which will count him out of the Denmark friendly international next month. The reason: Kelly will undergo a hernia operation tomorrow.
Gary has been struggling for the last couple of month with the injury and it intensified against Liverpool at the weekend. David O'Leary was hoping to nurse Kelly to the end of the season before sending him for surgery but that plan has gone up in smoke.
O'Leary said: "Gary will have the operation tomorrow. He missed a couple of games which we hoped might help, but he's come back and is still feeling the injury."
"There was some concern because Kelly had a similar operation two seasons ago, but this time it is the other side of the groin."
"We have Danny Mills available as a ready-made replacement and I also think Jonathan Woodgate could play there at a push, like Wes Brown has done for Manchester United."
