Doherty on trial at Ninian Park - November 1, 2000 Former Derry City goalkeeper Gerry Doherty is on trial at Third Division Cardiff City after failing to make an impression at Derby County under Jim Smith. Smith snapped up the 19-year-old Doherty from Derry City in February 1999 for £20,000 and it looked a good bit of business with many top clubs chasing his signature. But with Mart Poom holding down the first-team place in the Derby team, Doherty has become a forgotten man at the club. Doherty, who has been a member of the Irish Youth panel over the last twelve months, was not a huge gamble for Derby with the small layout of cash that it took to bring him to the club. He signed a two-and-a-half year deal at the time and, under a clause in the agreement with Derry, even if he had progressed into the first-team he still would only have cost the Rams a maximum of £100,000. |
