George scores first goal of the season - September 25, 2000 Luton's Liam George is one relieved man even though his team lost at the weekend. The Irish u21 international scored his first goal of the new campaign but it has taken 12 matches. George was linked with a summer move to Burnley and it seemed to pressurise the player even though the move never happened. Burnley offered £750,000 but Luton wanted at least £1m if they were going to part with one of their prized assets. Since then things have been up in the air at Luton. Manager Lennie Lawrence was sacked in a shock move by the club and was replaced by Ricky Hill. Hill doesn't seem fully convinced of George's ability and has used him mostly as a sub. George returned to form at the weekend even though Luton lost 3-2 at home against Swindon. George set up Mark Stein for the opening goal of the game and then scored himself in the 43rd minute from a tight angle. Elsewhere, Mickey Evans scored Bristol Rovers' second goal in the 3-0 win at high-flying Cambridge. After some great build-up play, the ball fell to Evans on the edge of the box and he hit a fierce drive which flew past Lionel Perez. The plaudits of the weekend go to Cheltenham's Martin Devaney. The Irish striker scored a hat trick in his team's 5-2 win over Plymouth, with Sean McCarthy scoring for the opposition. Devaney volleyed home his first and then hit the post in the 36th minute which led to his team's third goal. He got his second of the day when he chipped goalkeeper John Sheffield in the 41st minute and won the match ball with his third from the penalty spot with eleven minutes left on the clock. |
