Doherty first helps Spurs to dramatic win - January 3, 2001
Young Irish international Gary Doherty was the toast of White Hart Lane last night after his first goal for the club set Tottenham on their way to their first win in seven games.
Doherty, signed last season from Luton, scored Spurs opener after 27 minutes in a game which saw three red cards and three penalties.
The versatile youngster, who can play as an out and out striker, last night lined out as part of a three-man defence for Spurs - but his aerial power wreaked havoc at corners and frees.
On 32 minutes, Doherty won Spurs' second penalty - fluffed by Darren Anderton, who had already scored from the spot two minutes earlier to put Tottenham 2-0 up. Solano was sent off after handling Doherty's header on the line.
And Doherty also set up Sergeii Rebrov to make it 3-1, after Solano had pulled one back for Newcastle.
Kieron Dyer made it 3-2 from the penalty spot, after an incident in which Spurs keeper Neil Sullivan got his marching orders. And then Dyer got himself sent off, before Les Ferdinand wrapped up the scoring for Spurs!
Afterwards, relieved Spurs manager George Graham singled Doherty out for special praise for the second game running.
Newcastle's Irish 'keeper Shay Given, who lost his place after injuring himself before Christmas, watched from the bench as understudy Steve Harper conceded four.
