Doherty sets up London derby - March 12, 2001

Tottenham Hotspur face a mouth-watering north London derby against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-finals after a goal by young Donegalman Gary Doherty clinched a 3-2 win over West Ham yesterday.

Doherty - who has played both centre back and centre forward in Spurs' cup run - popped up with a 62nd-minute header from Sergey Rebrov's cross to make it 3-1, after Rebrov himself had struck either side of half time.

The 6'2" Republic of Ireland international, hailed as the new Niall Quinn, looked to have iced the cake - but his goal turned out to be far more important than that as West Ham threw everything into a determined comeback.

And at the end only Doherty's goal separated the sides after new-boy Todorov pulled one back for the Hammers.

This time last year, Doherty was plying his trade in the Nationwide second division with lowly Luton before moving to White Hart Lane for a bargain £1 million on March 27.

Now he is just 90 minutes away from an historic FA Cup final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium!
