Beckett out for season - January 31, 2001

Derry City striker Gary Beckett, who was carried off during Saturday's goalless draw with Longford Town, will miss the remainder of the season.

A scan has revealed medial ligament damage to the player's knee, which will rule him out for up to six weeks.

Beckett has decided to kill two birds with the one stone by undergoing a long-postponed groin operation during his lay-off - and recuperation from that will last into the close season.

With Liam Coyle still ruled out with his groin injury, manager Kevin Mahon is short of striking options for Saturday's FAI Cup third-round tie against Shelbourne. Triallist Dominic Sheppard, the former Brighton and Glenavon striker, has now been signed on a short-term contract and is virtually certain to figure in that match.
