Dempsey to get Bulldog chance - January 17, 2001
Former Everton midfielder Gary Dempsey will get a chance to prove himself in America with the A-League side Boston Bulldogs.
The unlucky 19-year-old Wexfordman, who missed out on Ireland famous 1998 u16 European Championship win because of injury, was released by Everton at the end of last season along with fellow Irishman Dean Delaney.
Both players went on trial at Port Vale and while Delaney was kept Dempsey had to go further afield to find football. He had trials in Scotland before returning to Wexford and it looked as if a bright career was over.
Bray decided to give the youngster a chance and he has repaid their faith with some excellent displays for Pat Devlin's team.
Gary will join the Boston Bulldogs for pre-season training and if he does enough he will be offered a contract.
Bulldogs coach Steve Nicol (formerly of Liverpool and Scotland) was notified about Dempsey by contact which was more than likely on-loan striker Paul Keegan who spent some time at Boston last season.
