No red faces at Terryland - February 17,
2001
Galway United 2 Kilkenny City 0
Galway United, the only Premier club to lose to Kilkenny City at home this season, made sure they didn't suffer that humiliation for the third time on the trot when they ground out a competent win over the Cats.
Kilkenny had already won at Terryland in both league and Cup this term but, missing a few of their better players, they never looked like repeating that feat.
The home side dominated the first half and made their dominance pay before the doubts had a chance to creep in, with two goals in the run-up to half time.
First Derek O'Brien tempted Richie Purdy into a suicidal challenge and skipper Billy Clery stepped up to despatch the spot kick. Then, two minutes later, Ben O'Connor diverted O'Brien's free to the Kilkenny net with a glancing header.
Kilkenny fared better in the second half but never really threatened to get one back, let alone two. Paul McAreavey and Warren Parkes did have half chances, but were unable to trouble Galway 'keeper Davy Forde.
