Grant does mate no favours! - December 23, 2000

Galway United 1 Derry City 0

There were no Christmas presents from Galway United's Stephen Grant for sometime team-mate Russell Payne when Derry City visited Terryland.

Grant and Payne played together at Boston Bulldogs last summer. But that was then and this is now - and Grant underlined the point with a seventh-minute winner against his old buddy.

A long Billy Clery free kick caught the Derry defence napping and Grant ran on unopposed to chip Payne from the edge of the box.

Sean Malee, Grant again, Eric Lavine and Derek O'Brien all had chances to put Galway further in front before Derry's Peter Hutton forced Davey Forde into his first real save after 70 minutes.

Galway United: Forde, Crossley, Silke, Clery, Morgan, Malee, Sheridan, Murphy, O'Brien, Grant, Lavine
Subs: Keogh for O'Brien 82, O'Connor for Silke 90
Goal: Grant 7

Derry City: Payne, Kelly, Hutton, Harkin, McCallion, Doherty, Hegarty, McLaughlin, Hargan, McCready, Beckett
