Galway players take pay cut - January 31, 2001
Galway United's players have agreed to take a massive £20,000 pay cut between now and the end of the season.
The club claims it is not in financial crisis - but could have been had the players not agreed to proposals from the board of directors. United's early FAI Cup exit at the hands of Kilkenny City meant that gate revenues for the rest of the season had to revised downwards.
The cuts range from 30% to 40% of the players' wage packets and will be in force to the end of the current season. The club has promised to repay some of the money if it becomes available.
"There is no cash nightmare facing Galway United but these cuts ensure our mid- and long-term future," director John Byrne said.
"It's not easy asking the players to surrender money they are fully entitled to by contract, but their reaction was brilliant."
