Galway players' plan to save club - February 20, 2001

Galway United players have already taken significant pay-cuts to help get the club on a financial even keel - and now they are planning their own fund-raising event to boost the Terryland coffers!

On March 2, the squad will play a challenge at Terryland against the county's senior Gaelic football side, which reached last year's all-Ireland final. The GAA men will be boosted by other leading local sports stars, like former Irish rugby international Eric Elwood.

Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy will referee the game and there will be entertainment by the Sawdoctors and theatre group Macnas. During half time, United's 1991 FAI Cup winning side will be introduced to the crowd.

Local businesses Supermacs, Radisson Hotels and Eire Communications are sponsoring the event.

Tickets are available from branches of Eire Communications, O'Briens Newsagents in Shop Street and from Terryland Park itself.
