Foley named Northampton player of the Century - June 30, 2000 Irish legend Theo Foley has been voted the most popular player ever to play for Northampton Town in a Team of the Century vote. Theo, who played for Northampton from 1961 to 1967, made 205 league appearances for the Cobblers before moving onto Charlton. He was capped for Ireland nine times and only learned about his inclusion in his first squad when the secretary of the Northampton fan club rang him to tell him that he had heard it on the radio! He returned to the club in 1990 as their manager but was sacked two years later when Northampton were taken over by new adminstrators. Foley said: "I never look back because there is no point in doing so. People are always asking me why I left a good job at Arsenal to come and manage Northampton. But I felt I could do a job at the club and it was a new challenge for me."
