Fitzgerald leaves the Den - October 19, 2000 Scott Fitzgerald has moved from Millwall to Colchester United on a free transfer - three months after he refused to join the Layer Road club. Fitzgerald decided during the summer that it was time to move away from the New Den and Colchester were one of the first teams to come in for the defender. Colchester boss Steve Whitton offered the player terms, but the former Irish u21 international refused to sign, instead waiting on a better offer to come along. He did not figure for Millwall this season, with joint managers Keith Stevens and Alan McLeary refusing to play him. Things didn't improve greatly after the managers were sacked and Mark McGhee took over - even though Fitzgerald did play last weekend as a replacement for fellow Irishman Robbie Ryan, who was injured. McGhee has his own ideas about the players on the books at Millwall and the first casualty is Fitzerald - though the former Wimbledon player won't mind too much. McGhee said: "Scott was well down the list of centre-backs and was blocking the way for some of our younger players, so it was a good time for him to move." |
