FAI Cup: easy ride is over - January 9, 2001
Eircom premier clubs got an easy passage through the second round of the FAI Cup - but yesterday's third-round draw announced that the soft ride is over with a vengeance.
The premier outfits will cast envious eyes towards Kilkenny City, who have been drawn to play non-leaguers Cherry Orchard in Richmond Park.
First-division Dundalk drew the other non-leaguers, Portmarnock, also away from home; and UCD will host first-division opposition - either St. Francis or Waterford United.
But the other premier outfits have been pitted together in a series of mouth-watering clashes which will ensure that at least some of the pre-competition favourites will bow out.
Bohemians must entertain Bray Wanderers in a fraught repeat of last year's semi-final; holders Shelbourne travel to the Brandywell to take on Derry City; and Finn Harps will host Shamrock Rovers at Ballybofey.
And it's a case of three into one for Cork City, Longford and St. Pat's - Cork and Longford must replay this Sunday, with the winners at home to the Saints.
Full third-round draw: Cherry Orchard v Kilkenny City; Cobh Ramblers v Athlone Town; Bohemians v Bray; Portmarnock v Dundalk; Derry City v Shelbourne; UCD v St. Francis or Waterford; Finn Harps v Shamrock Rovers; Cork City or Longford Town v St. Pat's. Ties to be played February 2, 3 and 4.
