Evans set for Bristol Rovers switch - September 7, 2000 West Brom striker Mickey Evans is set to move down a division in a bid to get first-team football. The former Irish international is set to join Bristol Rovers after impressing while on a month's loan at the club. The 27-year-old was not figuring with West Brom and in his first game on loan he scored. He also played an influential part in Rovers' 6-2 win at Brentford despite not getting on the scoresheet. Even thought Evans still has his best years ahead of him, his career is in decline. A couple of seasons ago he was playing in the top flight with Southampton but had to take a drop in a bid to secure first-team football. West Brom paid £750,000 for his services but his output of nine goals in three seasons was not enough for him to keep his place. Now he is set to play in Division Two, what next? Division Three, then the Conference and then obscurity? It's a long way from playing for Ireland against Romania in his only international cap. West Brom hope to recoup some of the £750,000 paid for the player. It is believed that Bristol Rovers manager Ian Holloway has agreed to pay £350,000 for his services. |
