Bray, Cork share top - August 21, 2000

Bray Wanderers and Cork City top the Eircom Premier table on maximum points after each ground out 1-0 wins at the weekend.

A Colm Tresson goal was enough to give promoted Wanderers the three points against Derry on Friday night. Colin O'Brien produced Cork's winner against Finn Harps on Saturday - leaving the Donegal side anchored to the bottom of the table.

Galway United rattled in five goals in their opening game last week - but on Friday night they conceded five and scored none when going down to Bohemians. That win put Bohs into joint third spot with UCD, who earned a 1-1 draw with St. Pat's on Friday night.

Champions Shelbourne got back to winning ways on Saturday when Tony McCarthy's goal was enough to beat Longford at Strokestown Road in the first-ever premier division game at the Longford venue.

Shamrock Rovers were lucky to escape from Buckley Park with a point. Kilkenny City led from the 57th minute with a Mulcahy goal. But Sean Francis equalised for the Hoops from the penalty spot deep in injury time.

It would have been the Cats' first-ever win against Rovers!
