Summer soccer: decision postponed - February 20, 2001

Eircom league bosses met last night with summer soccer at the top of the agenda - but they deferred a decision until a special summit meeting on March 5.

Last night's meeting of the league's ten-man Board of Control had before them a discussion document prepared by senior officials on the question of summer soccer.

Moves to switch the domestic season from winter to summer have gathered pace this year - largely because the league ground to a virtual standstill in December and January, with almost forty games postponed because of bad weather.

The lack of games in turn prompted cash-flow crises at many clubs - and many of the 22 clubs are now believed to favour a switch to summer soccer, at least on a trial basis.

Whatever decision is taken on March 5 will have to be ratified by the league clubs at their annual general meeting in May.
