Goal-fest in Eircom League Cup- September 27, 2000

Seven Eircom League Cup games last night produced an average of four goals a game, as UCD, Kilkenny City, St. Pat's and Shels went goal-crazy.

Pride of place went to the Students, who hammered non-league Bluebell United 7-0 at Belfield.

Kevin Kilmurray helped himself to a hat trick and former Manchester United starlet Kevin Grogan continued his scoring streak with an 88th-minute penalty. Eoin Bennis, Michael O'Donnell and David Quinn completed the rout.

There were seven goals at Richmond Park too, with St. Pat's scraping through by the odd goal, thanks to a late goal by Ger McCarthy. Pat Fenlon had levelled the match at 3-3 with ten minutes to go, but McCarthy popped up with the winner - his second goal of the night - a minute later.

Kilkenny City had scored only seven goals all season until last night, when they put four past Athlone Town at St. Mel's Park for a 4-1 win. Athlone old boy Warren Parkes nabbed one of the Cats' goals and, unfortunately, so did current Ahtlone player Jan Fitzell, who put through his own net just after half time.

There were four goals at Ballybofey, where Finn Harps made fairly heavy weather of seeing off the challenge of non-league neighbours, Swilly Rovers, before running out 3-1 winners.

Harps went behind to a Heaney goal in the 14th minute but the home side's Kosovar striker, Kemalj Avdiu, equalised on 26. Shane Bradley and former Ireland international Mark Kelly completed the scoring.

Shamrock Rovers had an excellent 2-1 win at Bray to go top of Group A; Waterford clinched their place in the quarter-finals by beating Cork City 1-0 at the RSC; and Cobh had their first win in the competition, 1-0 against non-league neighbours Rockmount at St. Colman's.
