Longford and Limerick through to cup quarters- September 25, 2000

Two teams have booked their place in the Eircom League Cup quarter-finals even though the group stage is not even over yet.

Limerick surprised Galway on Friday night in Group 6 to become the first team in the hat for the quarter-final, following a win against Mervue in their first game.

Derek McCarthy scored the opening goal against Galway in the 37th minute and Anthony Tobin secured a 2-0 win when he struck in the 74th minute.

Longford followed Limerick into the quarter-final when they won their second match in Group 5 on Saturday.

After beating Athlone Town 2-0 during the week they knew what was called for against Kilkenny at Buckley Park and in a topsy-turvy game they finally beat the Cats 3-2 - but Kilkenny will blame the sending off of Greg Costello for the loss.

Dave Mulcahy scored twice for Kilkenny but goals from Kelly, O'Connor and Kenny saw the in-form Longford through.

Finn Harps put themselves in pole position in Group 8 with a 1-0 win over Derry on Saturday. The prolific Alex Nesovic scored the only goal of the game to give Harps two wins out of two. They have to win or draw against Swilly Rovers in their final game to make it through to the next round.

Group 7 is left with a cracker of a match to see who tops the table. Cork City are out in front after beating both Cobh and Rockmount but they have to travel to the RSC to take on Waterford in their final game and the Blues know that if they win the game they will go through.
