League Cup round-up: City win Cork derby- September 21,
2000 Cobh Ramblers 0 Cork City 1 - Mark Herrick was the hero as Cork City got their Eircom League Cup campaign off to a successful start in the local derby against Cobh Ramblers last night. Herrick headed home a Dave Moore corner for what proved to be the only goal of the game. City had a string of subsequent chances, but Cobh 'keeper John Donegan was in dazzling form and kept the premier side at bay for the remainder fo the game. Rockmount 0 Waterford 0 - Non-league Rockmount beat Cork, Cobh and Waterford in last year's competition before going out the semi-final stage to Athlone and they've been drawn against the same trio this year. Last night they again gave Waterford a major fright, but had to settle for a scoreless draw. The Cork minnows had the best chance of the game when Thomas Long played his brother Danny in with a perfectly weighted through ball, but Waterford 'keeper Michael Devine saved well. Bluebell United 0 Drogheda United 3 - James Farrell conjured up a hat trick to send non-league Bluebell United packing in their League Cup opener last night. Farrell scored his first from the edge of the box after just eight minutes. Just on the half hour, Farrell slotted a penalty past Bluebell' keeper Mark Clohessy after Aiden Cooney had been pulled down. And Farrell converted a second penalty on 69 minutes before completing an eventful night by getting sent off two minutes from time! Derry City 3 Swilly Rovers 0 - League Cup champions Derry got their defence off to an easy start when they hit non-league neighbours Swilly Rovers for three at the Brandywell. Darren McCaul opened the scoring after 22 minutes, but it took Derry until the 89th minute to increase their advantage with a goal by substitute Billy Garnon. Darren McCready got Derry's third from the penalty spot in the fourth minute of added time. Home Farm Fingal 2 Dundalk 0 - Home Farm haven't been able to win a league game this season but last night they turned over promotion favourites Dundalk at Whitehall. Both goals came in the first half - Graham Doyle putting the Dubliners ahead after 16 minutes and Brian Honan making it two after Dundalk failed to clear their lines ten minutes later. St. Patrick's Athletic 3 St. Francis 1 - The League Cup also brought a rare and welcome win for premier division strugglers St. Pats at Richmond Park, with first division St. Francis proving themselves no match in the battle of the Saints. Colm Foley opened the scoring for the winners after just three minutes. Philip Hughes grabbed a deserved equaliser just after the restart, but Pats gradually ground St. Francis down and Ger McCarthy (67) and Liam Kelly (78) got the goals to seal the premier club's win. |
