Eircom four for Zurich - October 13, 2000 A four-man Eircom League delegation will be in Zurich today for the UEFA summit on the transfer rules. League chairman Michael Hyland will be accompanied by Shamrock Rovers' Joe Colwell, Phil Mooney of St. Pat's and Michael Cody of Cobh Ramblers. The current soccer transfer system is under pressure from the European Union, which claims it breaches EU labour laws on freedom of contract. Soccer chiefs say, however, that scrapping the transfer system would threaten the existence of most of Europe's smaller professional and part-time clubs, who depend on transfers as their main source of revenue. The summit is also expected to discuss UEFA's stringent new criteria for teams participating in competitions like the Champions League, UEFA Cup and InterToto Cup. The criteria relate to ground capacity and facilities, floodlighting, financial solvency and a range of other issues - and no Irish club currently comes anywhere close to full compliance. «back to eircom league stories |
