Supersaints sign Paul Byrne - July 21, 2000 As expected Paul Byrne has moved from Bohemians to Dublin rivals St. Patrick's Athletic. The former Celtic star signed for Pat Dolan's team on Wednesday night and should be available to play in St. Pat's friendly against West Ham on Sunday. Playmaker Byrne had a fine season with Bohemians last season. He scored some important goals for Roddy Collins' side on their way to the FAI Cup final. Byrne is one of the best exponents of crossing the ball in the Eircom League but if he has a problem it is that he can be lazy at times and always looks overweight. Elsewhere, Shelbourne have move quickly to strengthen their squad with the acquisitions of Ian Gilzean from Portadown and the return of Davy Byrne from Dundee United. English-born Gilzean was a big hit for St. Patrick's Athletic in the league-winning season of 1998-99. He scored goals for fun, which alerted Portadown to his talent. His time north of the border has not been a happy one but it should be back to old ways in the Eircom League. Byrne, who played a bit-part for Shelbourne in the 1998-99 season, got a dream move to the Scottish Premiership with Dundee United. The dream soon turned into a nightmare as in a full season in Scotland the 20-year-old only played four minutes of football. «back to eircom league stories |
