Champions meet in first round of League - June 23, 2000

The opening series of games in the Eircom League this season has thrown together last year's champions of the Premier League and the champions of the First Division. Shelbourne and Bray Wanderers meet at Tolka Park at 19:45 BST on Friday, August 11.

Longford Town and Kilkenny City also get a baptism of fire. Longford travel to Derry on Saturday, August 12, and Kilkenny face UCD at Belfield on Sunday, August 13. All three promoted teams would have been hoping to get off to a flying start but they will have their work cut out if they are to achieve this.

The draw has come up trumps all round. The other three fixtures left could all be classics. Galway United host Finn Harps at Terryland Park on the Friday night; St. Patrick's Athletic travel south on the Saturday to face arch-rivals Cork City; and Shamrock Rovers meet fellow Dubliners Bohemians on the Sunday.

Rovers will be without a ground for the start of the season as their planned stadium in Tallaght has hit some snags. They will face Bohs at Richmond Park. Their second home game of the season against Longford will be at Home Farm's ground in Whitehall and their third home match will be against Bray Wanderers at Dalymount Park.
