Dunne deal undone - September 5, 2000 Richard Dunne's proposed move to Wimbledon is dead and buried according to his club Everton. Manager Walter Smith has said the 20-year-old Dunne is no longer available for transfer. Richard starred for Ireland in the 2-2 draw against Holland on Saturday night and that could have forcing Smith's hand in respect to a transfer. Everton are in dire straits at the back at the moment with the news that Richard Gough's career is in jeopardy due to injury which forced Smith's hand to take Dunne off the transfer market. Dunne must surely have added to his £2.5m valuation after his show against Holland in his favoured position of centre-back. The reason that he wanted to leave Everton is because they wanted him to continue at right-back and then he was not guaranteed first-team football. The Wimbledon deal was close but Dunne could not agree personal terms so it stalled. Smith said: "The player was unable to agree terms and turned the move down - he will now stay at Everton. It would be very difficult for us to let him go anywhere now due to the situation that we have." Smith is still not in a position to pick Dunne even if he wanted to. The player is serving a five-match ban of which three games are gone. |
