Dundalk sink the Blues - September 1, 2000

Dundalk 1 Waterford 0

Dundalk remain on top of the Eircom Division One table after beating promotion rivals Waterford 1-0 at Oriel Park last night.

The result was decided controversially in the 53rd minute when Martin Reilly scored his third goal of the season. Waterford were adamant that Reilly was offside when David Crawley played the ball through to him but their feelings fell on deaf ears as referee John Breen allowed the goal to stand.

While the goal may have been controversial it still was no more than the Louthmen deserved as they took the game to Waterford throughout.

Brian Morrisroe went close to opening the scoring as did David Ward - but the latter's shot cracked of the base of the post and away to safety.

Waterford's best chance fell to Paul Scully but his header was brilliantly saved by Dundalk goalkeeper Brian McKenna. Waterford finished the game with only ten men after David Breen got his marching orders in the 82nd minute for a second bookable offence.

Meanwhile, Waterford have lost the services of Irish Youth international John Frost. Frost has moved to the USA where he has won a scholarship and although Waterford still hold his registration it is unlikely that he will be available for the remainder of the season.
