Savage spot on, Lee scores again - February 21, 2001

Irish underage international Alan Lee fired his fourth goal in two games last night to lift Rotherham to fourth place in Nationwide division two and keep the Millers' promotion challenge firmly on track.

Galway-born Lee was a hat-trick hero last time out as Rotherham beat Cambridge 3-0.

And last night the 6'2", 22-year-old striker was on target again, firing a 45th-minute opener - his eleventh goal of the season - in the 2-0 victory over Wrexham.

Lee got himself booked too, as did Wrexham's former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland centre back Brian Carey.

It was a better night though for another former Republic of Ireland senior international. Northampton Town's Davy Savage twice accepted the responsibility of taking penalties and was twice successful, as the Cobblers played out a 3-3 draw with Millwall.

Northampton fell 2-0 behind early in the second half, but after Marco Gabbiadini had pulled one back, Savage equalised from the spot on the hour.

The Irishman looked to have won it for Northampton when he scored his second penalty with just nine minutes left. But Christophe Kinet - an 84th-minute substitute for Irishman Robbie Ryan - grabbed an equaliser with just three minutes left on the clock.
