Drogheda's Christmas wage crisis - December 13, 2000
While US President Bill Clinton was last night hailing Ireland's 'Celtic Tiger' economy in Dundalk, just fifty kilometres down the road, Drogheda United were revealing that they are the latest Eircom League club in financial crisis.
Drogheda players - some of whom are already owed two weeks' pay - will today be asked to take a wage cut to help the club survive.
In return for agreement on a wage cut, the players will be paid the back-money they are owed.
If they fail to agree, the players will be free to seek new clubs - though with Drogheda in technical breach of contract, the players are probably already free agents as matters stand.
United also plan to approach the Eircom League for financial assistance.
