Wins for Dundalk, Limerick, Monaghan - August 17, 2000 Dundalk got their Eircom division one season up and running last night with a 2-0 win over St Francis at Oriel Park. Both goals came in the first half. The first, in the 35th minute, was an unfortunate own goal. Dundalk's Brian Morrisroe's shot was deflected off defender Eric Saul and the ball landed in the St. Francis' net. The goal prompted a burst of confidence in Dundalk and less than ten minutes later they were another goal ahead, when Greg O'Dowd produced a cross that was brilliantly answered by John Flanagan's header. Elsewhere, Limerick emerged victorious over Waterford, the only goal of the game coming from a penalty by former Blues boss Tommy Lynch. It was actually the third penalty given to Limerick in the game, Waterford goalkeeper Michael Devine having already saved the first two. But he couldn't keep this one out and the score stayed that way until the end. Meanwhile, Monaghan gained their second win of the season last night - a 1-0 victory over Drogheda at Gortakeegan. The visitors actually had the most chances, Derek Thornton proving a real threat. His best chance came in the 72nd minute when a cross landed his way. He chested it down and fired, but it crashed off an upright. The decider came in the 82nd minute, when Monaghan were given a free kick. Upped stepped former Drogheda man John Carroll and he smashed home a shot that flew past Drogheda keeper Warfield. |
