Middlesbro want Irwin - January 5, 2001
Middlesbrough are lining up a bid for Ireland legend Denis Irwin - an offer which might be too good to refuse for the Cork man.
Irwin, who quit international football to prolong his club career, is out of contract at Manchester United at the end of the season. He has been offered a new one-year deal by Alex Ferguson but this will not guarantee first team football.
Middlesbrough are ready to offer Denis guarantees of a place in the team as well as £30,000 a week wages. While Irwin is dedicated to United this offer might prise him away from Old Trafford.
Denis, currently in his testimonial year with the Red Devils, has been used sparingly this season by Alex Ferguson but when the big games come about he is usually a starter.
With only one or two seasons left in his legs he might be motivated by a fresh challenge at the Riverside Stadium - but first Middlesbrough have to secure their Premiership status.
