West ride away with the points - October 9, 2000 Derry City 0 Galway United 1 Galway continued their great start to the season with a well deserved win at the Brandywell on Sunday. The men from the West travelled north with little fear and even though they fielded a young team they did enough to merit the win. The fans turned out in big numbers to see Derry as they went for five straight wins in the Premier League but it was not to be their day as Galway made the running from the outset. Galway could have taken the lead as early as the fourth minute when former Celtic midfielder Ger Crossley lobbed Derry goalkeeper John Connolly but saw the ball fall the wrong side of the post. They did finally break the deadlock in the 38th minute through top goalscorer Eric Lavine and what a strike it was. The Derry defence failed to clear a Colin Fortune free kick. The ball fell to Lavine on the edge of the box and in a split second Lavine unleashed a brilliant volley which hit the roof of the Derry net.
