Derry Bhoyed by visit of Celtic- October 2, 2000 Derry City fans are in for a real treat tonight as Glasgow Celtic make the short trip across the Irish sea to play the Candystripes in a bid to get the Eircom Premier League club out of their financial troubles. Celtic boss Martin O'Neill had no hesitation about arranging the game after he heard that the club was about to be wound up by the British taxman. Derry-born O'Neill will bring a strong Celtic squad for the game which should prove highly entertaining for the sell-out 8,000 crowd. The kick-off is at 7:30 BST. Derry City director Jim Roddy is looking forward to the occasion tonight. He said: "When Martin told us that he would bring Celtic to Derry for this game the whole campaign to save the club really took off. "It became the focus of a series of fundraisers, such as the Phil Coulter golf classic, the Undertones concerts and the smaller events by pubs, supporters and individuals in the city." |
