No Payne, no gain for Derry - December 5, 2000

Derry City's American goalkeeper, Russell Payne, made his Eircom League debut for the Candystripes at the weekend - and now he wants to make a habit of it.

The 25-year-old from Washington has had to bide his time at the Brandywell since arriving three months ago, because of the form of former Leeds and Ireland u21 'keeper John Connolly.

But he starred in Derry's 1-1 draw with Bohemians on Sunday - and now says he wants more of the same.

"I would really like to stay at Derry because I believe this club can win trophies in the near future," Payne said.

"I had to be patient to get my chance but that was only right because John has played well this season."
