Danes on for November return - March 1, 2000

Negotiations between the FAI and the Danish FA yesterday have resulted in last night's postponed international friendly being pencilled in for November in Dublin.

The cancellation left both bodies counting the cost in footballing terms - with the FAI also taking a hefty financial hit.

Both countries were using the friendly as preparation for forthcoming World Cup qualifiers - Ireland against Cyprus on March 22 and Denmark against Malta on March 23. Neither country will now have a warm-up game before going into competitive action.

"Of course this is a disappointment because I had intended to give every one of the 16 outfield players in the squad a run for some period of the match," Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy said.

"But the bigger consideration was the safety of the players and spectators."

On the financial front, the FAI must refund 31,000 tickets at a cost of around IR£250,000, plus pay the expenses of the Irish and Danish senior and u21 teams - about IR£50,000.

It's a serious blow for the association, which is embroiled in a costly planning process for Eircom Park. But it could mean a bonus for fans, with the FAI now attempting to slate extra international friendlies against attractive opposition for later in the year in an effort to recoup the losses.
