Saints' interest in Kiely - October 31, 2000

Dean Kiely has earned rave reviews for his goalkeeping prowess since Charlton's promotion to the Premiership, so much so that the Irish international is being linked with a move to Southampton.

But would this be a good move for the brilliant Kiely? Not likely! Charlton are a better team than Southampton and have more chance of staying in the top flight that Glen Hoddle's men, so it would be foolish to take a step back in his career that he has struggled manfully to build.

Hoddle has made it quite clear that he wants to replace Paul Jones and the goalkeeper's mistake against Manchester United at the weekend could hasten that action.

He tried to sign Dundee United's Robert Douglas, but Celtic won that battle. And he has also looked at Ian Walker, but the Tottenham shotstopper has more off days than are acceptable.

If Hoddle is to get Kiely, he will have to pay Charlton at least £2m for his services - a lot of money for a club that has the lowest average gates in the Premiership.
